Nori Soil Sequestration Carbon Offset Project

Nori Soil Sequestration

Kent County, Maryland, USA

This project supports farmers at Harborview Farms in Maryland to remove carbon from the atmosphere by storing it in the soil.Decades of industrial agriculture have depleted our soil of essential nutrients and carbon. When farmers adopt regenerative practices, they return carbon to their soil and keep it there, improving soil health and farming outcomes while reducing emissions.

You can see more details on this project on Nori's site.

Why we chose this project

Nori uses COMET-Farm (Carbon Management Estimation Tool), a tool funded by the USDA and developed by Colorado State University, to collect farm-level management data that verifies carbon sequestration. By applying COMET-Farm’s accounting approach,  Nori is able to show that a farmer’s sustainable practices are responsible for increasing soil organic carbon versus a ten year baseline average without sustainable practices.Nori’s standard requires annual data updates and verification of that data every three years.

Carbon removals are verified by independent, third party verifiers before being listed in the marketplace. Every certificate of carbon removal will be attached with a user’s report, and the verifiers meet the same criteria as other carbon markets and standards

Nori issues Nori Carbon Removal Tonnes (NRTs) only to growers whose changed farming practices led to incremental carbon sequestration as compared to conventional land management practices. These practices include the adoption of no till farming, cover-crop farming, and intercropping. With information on these practices from the farm, Nori and partner COMET-Farm are able to establish a previous baseline that represents the incremental removal of CO2 above and beyond farming practices that would have otherwise continued.

The Nori guarantee ensures every NRT represents one tonne of CO2 removed and retained in terrestrial reserves (like soil) for a minimum of ten years. In agreeing to the terms of Nori’s project registration contract, the project owner commits that land to a ten year contract. Even if the original project owner no longer is a tenant on that land, the terms of the Nori contract transfer with the land to the new tenant. At the end of the ten years, Nori makes a new project baseline publicly available.

Nori further guarantees carbon sequestration and storage from its projects by maintaining an insurance reserve to replace any lost carbon from any unintentional events (e.g., flood, or drought).

Nori collects energy use and compost brought into the farm to ensure that any emissions due to "importing" of resources to operate the farm do not negate the additional carbon removal. Nori only monetizes the incremental removal.

When you purchase carbon removals from Nori, they are retired immediately and the retirement along with the location of retirement is recorded on blockchain (an immutable public ledger). This ensures that your removals cannot be sold again and that no one other than you can take credit for removing the carbon represented in your certificate.

Other Benefits

Economic + conservation benefits. Decades of industrial agriculture have depleted our soil of essential nutrients and carbon. When farmers adopt regenerative practices, they return carbon to their soils and keep it there. These practices also improve the soil health, lower use of chemical fertilizers, reduce pollution, and make the fields more drought-resistant.

. The carbon offsets selling through Nori began in 2015.

Partner Efficiency. Nori has created a platform to transparently share projects and buyers of NRTs. Additionally, Nori’s software platform reduces overhead costs to ensure that the project developer (farmer) receives the maximum amount paid for their carbon sequestration. Nori has integrated with COMET-Farm to greatly reduce verification costs to farmers and uses an Application Programming Interface (API) between software platforms to transfer operational data to easily estimate carbon removal. Nori takes a 15% transaction fee from the buyer.

Project Updates

Nori and Joro will provide periodic updates to Joro users who buy into this project.

Project Verifications

Nori is creating a new alternative verification registry, similar to existing verification registries such as Gold Standard and Verra.

Nori’s methodologies are developed with input from a Peer Review Committee of experts who ensure the scientific integrity of the outcomes. All Peer Committee members must be independent and have no direct interest in any NRT source active in the Nori marketplace.
